5 Bathroom Design Sins I’d Never Commit

As an interior designer, I’ve seen my fair share of bathroom blunders. The truth is, it’s often the small details that make the biggest impact - both in terms of style and function. So, let’s talk about a few “bathroom sins” I would never commit (and I recommend you don’t either). Your future self - and your bathroom - will thank you.
1. White Grout: The Bane of My Existence
A crisp white bathroom may look beautiful in glossy magazine spreads, but in real life? White grout is a nightmare. It discolours quickly, shows every speck of dirt, and loses its fresh look almost instantly. Instead, opt for a soft grey, beige, or even a bold coloured grout. Not only will it stay looking cleaner for longer, but it can also add a subtle design detail that elevates the entire space.
2. Relying on a Single Ceiling Light
One overhead light is simply not enough for a bathroom. Good lighting is essential - whether you’re applying makeup, shaving, or enjoying a long soak. Layer your lighting with wall sconces, vanity lighting, or even dimmable options to create different moods. Think practical and atmospheric: bright in the morning, soft and relaxing in the evening.
3. The Pedestal Sink Predicament
While pedestal sinks can look elegant, they’re rarely practical unless you’re blessed with a palatial bathroom. Storage is key in any bathroom, and a pedestal offers none. A vanity with drawers or cupboards not only gives you space to hide the everyday essentials but also helps the room feel calmer and more organised. In this case, function really does trump form.
4. Shower Controls Under the Shower Head
There’s nothing worse than stepping into an icy blast of water while trying to adjust the temperature. Placing the controls outside the shower zone means you can set your perfect temperature before stepping in. It’s a small design detail that makes a huge difference in comfort and usability.
5. The “Everything Matches” Trap
Buying the entire matching bathroom set - tiles, taps, accessories, all in one style - may feel like the safe option, but it often results in a flat, impersonal space. A well-designed bathroom is layered and considered. Mix finishes, combine textures, and introduce contrast. This is where your personality can shine through, turning a bathroom from bland to beautiful.
✨ Designing a bathroom that’s both practical and stylish is all about the details. Avoid these pitfalls, and you’ll create a space that not only looks amazing but truly works for you.
