From Bland to Bold: A Moody Bedroom Makeover in Hampton Court

We recently had the pleasure of working with a returning client who, after a successful bathroom renovation, was eager to infuse his bedroom with the same bold character. He’d fallen in love with the dramatic feel we created in his bathroom and wanted his bedroom to echo that same sophisticated vibe. The challenge? A limited budget meant we couldn't undertake major structural changes like new flooring or shutters. We also had to work with his existing bed and incorporate a large, wooden mirror. Despite these constraints, we were determined to deliver a truly transformative space.
The result? A complete 180! We took a bland bedroom, dominated by an unsuitable red, and turned it into a moody, jewel-box of a retreat. The space is now inviting, relaxing, and exudes a sense of luxurious comfort. Deep, dark shades have created a cocooning atmosphere, perfect for rest and rejuvenation.

The Design Process:
- Setting the Stage: Mood Board Magic: Our journey began with a mood board. This crucial first step allowed us to establish a clear vision for the room, ensuring it was both beautiful and functional. One key challenge was addressing storage. Instead of two bulky chests of drawers, we opted for two more traditional bedside tables, which freed up space and allowed us to introduce a stylish and practical ottoman. This thoughtful approach to space planning is essential, especially in smaller rooms.
- Sourcing and Colour Selection: The Devil is in the Details: Once the mood board was approved, we dived into the exciting process of sourcing all the materials and fixtures. A critical element of this design was the colour palette. Because the room faces west, we knew the light would play a significant role in how the colours appeared. We meticulously tested multiple shades, painting them on A4 sheets and observing how the light reflected on them at different times of day. This thorough testing process led us to the perfect shade: Railings by Farrow & Ball. Its rich, deep hue provided the ideal backdrop for the moody atmosphere we were aiming for.
- Upcycling the Mirror: A Touch of DIY: While we typically leave all the work to experienced professionals, the large wooden mirror our client wanted to keep presented a unique opportunity. We decided to give it a fresh look with a fantastic champagne-coloured paint. This simple upcycling project transformed the mirror, bringing it perfectly in line with our overall vision. The result was a stunning interplay of textures and metals: the sleek silver bed, the newly painted champagne mirror and floor vases, and the warm glow of the copper pendant light. These elements came together harmoniously, creating a visually rich and layered space.
