From Drab to Fab: A Modern Bathroom Transformation in Surrey

This tired bathroom was in desperate need of a refresh. Dated linoleum flooring, white square tiles, and a curved bathtub were screaming for an update. My client craved a space with character, but more importantly, they wanted a longer bathtub for luxurious soaks. Budget constraints meant we couldn't alter the existing layout (swapping the WC and basin would have been ideal), but we got creative and borrowed space from an adjacent airing cupboard to create a new shower recess and accommodate the longer tub!

The transformation was all about maximizing impact within the given limitations. Here's a peek into our design journey:

1. Defining the Vision:

During the design brief stage, we honed in on my client's aesthetic preferences. A bold colour (dark blue or green were top contenders), classic metro tiles, and sleek matte black fixtures were must-haves. The technical challenge? Finding a way to fit a 10cm longer bath.

2. Setting the Mood:

With the layout fixed, we moved on to the mood board, solidifying the room's style as a blend of modern farmhouse and industrial chic. Think moody dark green walls, crisp white tiles, contrasting black hardware, and the warmth of bronze elements. This combination promised a space that was both stylish and inviting.

‍

3. Bringing the Design to Life:

Once the design was approved, the sourcing began. Each element played a crucial role in achieving our vision:

  • Walls: The dark green walls create a dramatic backdrop, setting a sophisticated and inviting tone. After testing numerous swatches, we chose the perfect shade: Graham & Brown's "Glasshouse."
  • Tilework: White subway tiles on the walls and floor deliver a clean, timeless aesthetic, while the floor tiles inject a dose of playful pattern.
  • Hardware & Fixtures: Matte black plumbing fixtures, towel bars, and a ladder towel rack provide a sleek, modern contrast against the green walls. A touch of warmth and luxury is introduced with a gold-framed mirror.
  • Vanity & Storage: A simple, metal-framed vanity with open shelving offers practical storage without overwhelming the small space. It perfectly embodies the industrial chic vibe.
  • Greenery: A strategically placed potted plant adds a touch of nature and breathes life into the space.

‍

4. Project Management Challenges (and Triumphs!):

As the project manager, I oversaw every detail of the renovation. And wouldn't you know it, in this tiny space, everything that could go wrong, did! Working shortly after a lockdown, we faced material shortages and had to be resourceful, finding quick and effective solutions on the fly. We swapped plaster for plasterboard and ceramic tiles for vinyl – flexibility was key!

‍

Despite the challenges, the end result was absolutely worth it! This once-tired bathroom is now a stylish and functional sanctuary.

Services we provided: A dedicated Bathroom design service which included:

  1. Mood board & Final presentation
  2. Sourcing of All Materials & Fixtures
  3. Regular site visits to oversee the work.
  4. Procurement and install.

This project demonstrates that even with budget and space limitations, a well-designed bathroom transformation is possible! By carefully considering the client's needs and style, and by being creative with solutions, we were able to create a space that is both beautiful and functional.
